BATON ROUGE, LA – Over the course of ten weeks, MMR stationed a cohort of 14 students at jobsites across the United States as a part of its newly-launched learning and development program, MMR University (MMR-U). The interns, who were selected to join the MMR-U pilot program, traveled to their field assignments to gain valuable insight into industry practices after completing their first semester in the spring. The two-and-a-half-year construction internship program combines dynamic instruction with field experience and personal mentorship from seasoned MMR professionals.
“We are thrilled to witness MMR University’s impact unfold through our interns’ success in their field placements,” said MMR President/CEO James “Pepper” Rutland. “We anticipate watching MMR University grow to offer dynamic instruction to all employees at MMR, sustaining the long-term growth, talent retention and vibrant company culture that MMR has upheld for decades.”
While completing their assignments, MMR strategically paired students with seasoned field professionals who provided one-on-one mentorship and guidance throughout the summer. Students worked at their designated jobsites alongside their mentors, where they experienced applications of course material covered during the spring semester. MMR stationed students at site locations throughout the United States, including Phoenix, AZ; Boydton, VA; Fort Smith, AR; Salt Lake City, UT; San Antonio TX; Ingleside TX; and Baton Rouge, LA.
The Baton Rouge Business Report recently recognized MMR University for its innovative solution to rising workforce demands. Intern Hayley Macaluso discusses how her experience as an MMR-U intern has translated into practical skills and real-world applications at her designated jobsite. She and classmate Grace Robert are currently stationed at the Rio Tinto Kennecott Copper Mine in South Jordan, Utah, where MMR performs service and maintenance.
MMR-U’s construction internship program is designed to bridge the gap between classroom learning and practical application, creating a learning environment “where the classroom meets the real world.” Through innovative learning, hands-on experience and industry partnerships, MMR-U creates opportunities for students to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to excel in their careers.
MMR-U prepares the future of construction professionals by providing comprehensive training and industry exposure. As the program progresses, MMR-U will scale up to provide lifelong skills and leadership development for all employees, leading to long-term growth opportunities for staff, world-class talent across the company and a dynamic culture that primes MMR for future sustained growth.
