MMR Receives Greater Baton Rouge Industry Alliance 2017 Craft Workforce Development Award

BATON ROUGE, La. – MMR was honored with a Craft Workforce Development Award presented by the Greater Baton Rouge Industry Alliance (GBRIA) at the 10th Annual Craft Workforce Development Awards Banquet.

The GBRIA awards program recognizes contractors who invest in workforce development programs that include recruitment, assessment, training, career path development and retention of employees. Approximately 350 guests attended the event where BASF Geismar Senior Vice President Tom Yura presented the keynote address on significant efforts to sustain Louisiana’s craft workforce.

MMR received a 2017 Award of Merit in the Hard Craft (Specialty Trade), Division II Size category. This category acknowledges contractors who demonstrate a commitment to support the development of a safe, capable and motivated contract craft workforce.

“Maintaining skilled craftsmen is crucial to the success of MMR and our industry,” said MMR President and CEO James “Pepper” Rutland. “In order to stay ahead of the curve, we have established a NCCER-accredited Craft Training Program which provides employees opportunities to advance their electrical and instrumentation skills and recognizes their accomplishments with meaningful career incentives.”

In 2014, MMR established a one-of-a-kind Craft Training Center to propel its certified craftsmen ahead of the projected industry manpower shortages. The Craft Training Center offers an Electrical Journeyworker Apprenticeship training program, recognized by the U.S. Department of Labor and the State of Louisiana, as well as NCCER “Knowledge Verified”, NCCER “Performance Verified,” and “MMR Verified” certifications.

In a MMR nomination letter to the GBRIA awards committee, Shell Convent Contract Safety Excellence Site Lead Glenn Vicknair said, “In an industry of ever-changing project demands and schedules, it is important that Shell be able to rely upon a subcontractor that is consistent in its output of exceptional quality and service, and MMR does just that. Through its expertly trained staff, I can feel at ease in knowing that the electrical and instrumentation portion of our project endeavors is in capable hands with MMR.”

“MMR invests time and resources in its employees in the areas of training and development at their Craft Training Complex,” said Major Contracts Supervisor Gretchen Malone in a nomination letter from BASF. “This goes above and beyond what BASF requires and adds an extra layer of confidence in the quality of personnel and work product we’ve come to expect from MMR.”
