MMR Named Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center Partner of Compassion; Sponsors its Give Day Fundraising Campaign

September 9, 2022

BATON ROUGE, La. – MMR is honored to be recognized as a Partner of Compassion by Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center while supporting its second annual Give Day fundraising campaign to help power life-saving programs across Louisiana and southwest Mississippi.

“We all have family and friends who have been touched by cancer and MMR is dedicated to ensuring our community’s cancer center continues to provide the best technology, expert physicians, support staff and early detection and outreach services to those impacted by the disease,” said James B. “Pepper” Rutland, MMR president and CEO.

As a “Partner of Compassion,” and with over $100,000 in giving and engagement, MMR received a distinguished placement on the Cancer Center’s donor recognition wall at its “Our Community Celebration” on August 30. The cumulative giving wall recognizes corporations, foundations and individuals who remain passionately committed to improving cancer care in the Baton Rouge community. MMR’s tile is located in the first-floor atrium of Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center’s main campus in Baton Rouge, La.

On September 1, Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center hosted its annual one-day fundraising campaign, Give Day, sponsored by MMR. The Cancer Center surpassed its goal of collecting $34,000 to honor the 30 Louisiana parishes and four Southwest Mississippi parishes it serves, with over $68,000 in funds raised to provide continued cancer services to thousands of patients and their families.

MMR sponsors programs and events hosted by Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center since becoming a corporate champion in 2019, including the Hillar C. Moore Jr. Golf Classic and most recently The Echo Alliance, a collaborative group of passionate women dedicated to moving the needle in cancer care. Additionally, MMR is proud to support Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center’s Prevention on the Go Program. The mobile program brings cancer education, screenings and patient navigation to the community in addition to workplaces such as MMR.

In 2021, approximately 10 MMR employees received critical diagnoses and were navigated through the Prevention on the Go program, while over 100 participated in education sessions to encourage cancer prevention and early detection. MMR President/CEO James B. “Pepper” Rutland believes the convenience of the onsite screenings at MMR makes it so easy, it’s hard for employees to say “no.”
