MMR Achieves Distinguished Safety Designation, Named ABC STEP Diamond Level Contractor

March 23, 2022

BATON ROUGE, La.—MMR is proud to announce its Diamond Level achievement in the Associated Builders and Contractor’s STEP safety management system, maintaining an exceptional level of safety that ranks 655% higher than the industry average. ABC’s world-class safety program has drastically improved safety performance among construction industry participants over the past three decades.

“We are honored to achieve this extraordinary safety designation,” said MMR President/CEO James “Pepper” Rutland. “At MMR, we consider our employees our greatest asset, and their safety is of the utmost importance. Every employee has the right to initiate Stop Work Authority for any task they deem unsafe or misunderstood without fear of repercussion.”

STEP applicants measure their safety processes and policies on 24 key components through a detailed questionnaire, striving to implement or enhance safety programs that reduce jobsite incidents. In addition to effective training, programs and policies, MMR experienced no lost time incidents and had a Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR) of 0.10., a rate twenty-four times better than the national rate for Electrical Contractors, 2.4.

“Safety is a journey, and that journey is possible because of systems like STEP, which enables ABC member contractors like MMR to have a safer and more productive jobsite,” said Greg Sizemore, ABC vice president of health, safety, environment and workforce development. “Committing to total human health is essential to ensure both the physical and mental health and safety of our workforce, and I commend MMR for consistently fulfilling those commitments to raising the bar of safety performance.”

According to ABC’s annual Safety Performance Report, applying STEP processes dramatically improves safety performance among participants regardless of company size or type of work. In order of highest to lowest, ratings range from Diamond, to Platinum, Gold, Silver, Bronze and Participant. Implementing STEP procedures can reduce recordable incidents by up to 85%, making the best performing companies over 600% safer than the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics industry average.
