MMR Receives Top Honors at ABC National Excellence in Construction Awards Program

BATON ROUGE, La. – MMR received top honors at the 29th annual Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc. (ABC) National Excellence in Construction Awards Gala, held in Long Beach, California. MMR received the Eagle Award, the highest honor, for its work on the Shell Olefin Flare Gas Recovery Project, and the Pyramid Award, the second highest honor, for the BASF Geismar 700 Bus Replacement Project.

Winning Projects:

ABC National Excellence in Construction Eagle AwardElectrical Industrial, Less than $10 millionOlefin Flare Gas Recovery Project/Shell Deer ParkDeer Park, Texas

The Shell Deer Park Olefins Flare Gas Recover Project was an EPA regulated project to reduce emissions of air pollutants while saving energy and raw materials. MMR was contracted to perform all the electrical and instrumentation scope for the project as well as start-up and assistance. In total, MMR installed 20,230 feet of conduit, 90,940 feet of electrical cable, 9,800 cable terminations and 160 light fixtures.

ABC National Excellence in Construction Pyramid AwardElectrical Industrial, $2 million to $10 millionBASF Geismar 700 Bus Replacement ProjectGeismar, Louisiana

MMR provided electrical and instrumentation services in addition to construction management, execution and commissioning assistance on the BASF Geismar 700 Bus Replacement Project. The project objective was to provide backup power to 4 existing substations, replacing aging and obsolete switchgear, installing redundant power feeders to mitigate the inherent risk of legacy underground feeder failures.The infrastructure included a cable tray system spanning roughly a 60-acre area and included multiple buildings and pipe racks located inside of BASF’s 2,300-acre facility.

The Excellence in Construction awards program is the industry’s leading competition that honors both general and specialty contractors for innovative and high-quality merit shop construction projects. The award honors all construction team members, including the contractor, owner, architect and engineer. The winning projects, selected from entries submitted from across the nation, and were judged on complexity, attractiveness, unique challenges, completion time, workmanship, innovation, safety and cost.

A panel of industry experts served as the competition’s judges. This year's panel included representatives from the Building Owners and Managers Association International, the Smithsonian Facilities Construction Division, the Construction Management Association of America, Engineering News-Record, Design-Build Institute of America and various construction-related firms nationwide.
