April 6, 2020
MMR held a March Madness Campaign in support of cancer awareness, prevention and detection and the efforts of Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center. During the month of March, employees participated in several activities to bring awareness to skin cancer and support the Center’s mission, including a skin cancer seminar, a skin cancer screening and employee/company fundraising.
The event kicked off at the beginning of March with a skin cancer education seminar performed by Dr. Sarah McGinty, Louisiana Dermatology Associates. Dr. McGinty spoke to employees about the various types of skin cancer, including how to identify, who is most at risk and measures to prevent.
The following week, Dr. McGinty visited the MMR campus again to perform skin cancer screenings on approximately 80 employees through the Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center’s Prevention on the Go Program. More than half of those never been evaluated for skin cancer and several were navigated for a follow up.
Employees who participated in the screenings received cooling towels, sunburn detection stickers, sunglass cases, sunscreen, lip balm and more. Additionally, $1,775.00 was collected to support the Cancer Center, and employees who donated, were entered into a chance to win gift cards to restaurants, retailers, etc.
MMR President/CEO James “Pepper” Rutland also participated in a remote radio show, “The Brand” with Carey Guglielmo on Talk 107.3FM, discussing MMR’s partnership with the Cancer Center and the importance of offering health and wellness incentives to employees. The show also featured Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center President/CEO Todd Stevens, Screening Physician Dr. Sarah McGinty and Dana Simmons, an MMR employee and cancer survivor who received care and treatment under the Cancer Center. The Mary Bird Perkins Prevention on the Go – Workplace Program brings early detection, prevention, education, and screenings to company worksites at no charge to the employee. In 2018, MMR was one of the first companies to participate in the program, and now offers screenings for oral and breast cancers (in addition to skin cancer). MMR’s March Madness campaign included extending the screenings to its other offices throughout Louisiana but is delayed due to COVID-19. MMR looks forward to the opportunity to resume these beneficial screenings for its employees.
