MMR Establishes New Learning Facilities at LSU
March 16, 2018
BATON ROUGE, La. – MMR recently established several new learning facilities at the newly constructed Patrick F. Taylor Hall on Louisiana State University’s (LSU) campus. The facilities are the result of MMR’s $1 million donation to the Construction Management Program.
“We are happy to support research and development initiatives that will benefit our community and better prepare students for successful employment in the construction industry,” said MMR President/CEO James “Pepper” Rutland. Rutland is a 1972 alumnus of LSU’s first graduating class of construction management students.
The MMR Building Information Modeling (BIM) Lab, or “Cave” as it is commonly referred to, uses the latest virtual reality, 3-D technology to create an immersive learning environment where one can see a building or structure before it is built. Its application provides designers and contractors the ability to make changes to the structure prior to the building’s construction at little or no expense.
In the MMR Advanced Materials and Methods Laboratory, researchers and students are collaborating on groundbreaking techniques to improve concrete and asphalt durability and sustainability. This includes studying the use of microcapsules and their ability to heal concrete upon cracking.
Both the BIM and Advanced Materials and Methods laboratories are a part of the recent $116 million Patrick F. Taylor Hall construction on LSU’s campus. Patrick F. Taylor Hall houses the College of Engineering and is now the largest academic building in the state of Louisiana and the largest engineering building in the U.S.
